A sound understanding of the population dynamics of Heterodera glycines requires much information on the biology of this pathogen. This knowledge also is important for management purposes, especially now when few effective nematicides are available and resistance has been overcome by genetically shifting populations. Since a low population density at planting is a prerequisite for high yield, manipulating the population of this pest of soybean is necessary. Clearly, long-term absence of a host will achieve low population densities. However, growers are often unable or unwilling to remove soybean from production for the time necessary to reduce the H. glycines population to low levels. This long period of non-host is required because the nematode survives well, especially overwinter. Elucidating the mechanism of winter dormancy should be useful in developing cultural practices that would enhance winter mortality. The key seems to be preventing diapause. The integration of several practices that prevent population increase of H. glycines should enable growers to achieve economically acceptible yields. |
